Storage Space for Your New Home
Plan your new home’s storage areas before you build. First, take stock of your current home’s storage space and determine your additional needs. For example, measure the linear feet of hanging space in your clothes closets and calculate the square feet of floor space used for storage in your closets, attic, basement, garage, etc. How much more storage space do you need?
Two covered porches span the front of this quaint three-bedroom one story home. Inside, the family room provides an intimate setting for family and friends, with the eat-in kitchen politely tucked to the side. All three bedrooms adjoin the family room area and share a centralized bath. |

Remember, effective storage space is more than counting the number of closets in a home, or having an unfinished space above the garage. With temptation to put things “out of sight – out of mind,” these areas are susceptible to clutter and inefficiency, unless equipped with proper shelving or storage systems.
In addition to closet or attic space, consider these storage options:
- Space beneath staircases – perfect for built-in storage or even as office nook
- Shallow cabinets in hallways or on stair landings
- Cubby holes or lockers in the laundry room for backpacks, boots, hats, etc.
- Bedroom window seats with built-in storage
- Built-in “appliance garages” between the kitchen countertops and cabinets
- Built-in cabinetry and display walls for collectibles, books, etc.
- Third-car garage bay, finished as a storage room
- Garage organization and storage systems
